DEDICATION AND PERSISTENCE
Above all our volunteers are dedicated, persistent, loving, caring, resourceful, and determined as is demonstrated by this story about Duke, a standard Poodle, written by NCPR volunteer Sharon Cabral.
Duke is a 4(ish) year old standard poodle with severe separation anxiety.
Because of his anxiety, he had failed in several different homes. When Duke was returned
to NCPR for the 4th time, Patty and I knew that something had to be done in order to
find Duke a forever home, and more importantly to save his life.
I fell in love with Duke...he is a very loving, and well behaved dog, when he is around people.
He is so sweet and really wants to pleasehis person. Duke had been to the vet, and had been placed
on traditional tranquilizers, in an attempt to alleviate his anxiety. There were times, when he howled all night long in his
kennel, even with taking the medication.
I had taken my dog to a holistic vet in Oakland, Dr. Gary Richter, and I can tell you first hand,
that Dr. Richter saved my dog's life. Boomer had been suffering from chronic liver hepatitis for 4 years,
and his liver enzyme levels had reached alarming levels. His liver was enlarged, and Boomer was
becoming quite uncomfortable. Dr. Richter suggested Boomer change his diet,
and also put him on various supplements and vitamins. Within 6 months, Boomer's liver
enzymes had returned to normal levels, and he is perfectly comfortable now. Amazing story.
Patty and I both felt that traditional "western" modalities were not working for Duke, and we both felt
that we had nothing to lose by trying other options that were available for him. I volunteered
to transport Duke to Dr. Richter in Oakland. Dr. Richter was optimistic that there was hope for Duke,
and that Duke had the potential to calm down enough so we could find an adopter for him.
Duke received three different acupuncture sessions, and I saw amazing results immediately. Within
only a couple of minutes of having the acupuncture needles placed, Duke calmed right down and went
to sleep on the floor of the vet's office. Dr. Richter also placed Duke on some Chinese herbs, and recommended
the "Thundershirt" for him to wear. http://www.thundershirt.com/
Thundershirt uses gentle, constant pressure to calm your dog, effectively aiding anxiety, fearfulness, barking and more.
Now Duke is in a loving, forever home, and his people are absolutely thrilled to have him! They truly
believe that these modalities have really worked for Duke, and they are currently in the process of weaning
Duke off all his "traditional" tranquilizers.
